The Best Way To Clean Tile Grout
The best way to clean grout, whether floor tiles or shower walls, is with a hot steam cleaner. But Rainbow Derbyshire understands that this kind of state-of-the-art cleaning machine is not always accessible.
Cleaning grout WITH a machine
You can hire grout cleaning machines from most hardware stores, and even online. It is important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions that are given, but here are a few tips to keep in mind.
– Add a cup of white vinegar to the water solution for extra cleaning power.
– If it is especially dirty, use a stiff nylon brush to scrub the grout lines after steaming them.
– To remove deeply embedded stains, use a power drill with a circular nylon brush attachment.
– As you work, use a dry cloth to wipe up the dirty sludge the machine removes from the grout.
Cleaning grout WITHOUT a machine
There are a few household essentials that can actually be used to clean floor and wall grout.
Oxygen-based bleach
Oxygen-based bleach, a non-toxic cleaning chemical, is very effective at removing stains from just about anything.
– Follow instructions on the label to produce a diluted bleach solution
– Pour/sponge the diluted solution onto the grout
– Allow to absorb into for up to 15 minutes
– Finish off by scrubbing, with a stiff brush, the solution into the grout lines
Baking Soda
Baking soda is also a household essential that can be used to clean grout.
– Pour a thin layer of baking soda into the area(s).
– Using a spray bottle, spray a little water onto the baking powder to create a paste.
(You can create the paste beforehand, and then apply the paste onto the affected area.)
– Allow the paste to work it’s magic for thirty minutes.
– Into a bucket place two cups of white vinegar and 2.5 litres of warm water.
– With a stiff nylon brush, dip into the vinegar and water solution and scrub.
