Helpful tips to remove stubborn stains on carpets

Arranging an annually professional carpet clean will help you to get the most out of your carpets and/or rugs. This will help keep your carpets looking fresh and new, removing dirt and dust that has built up within the carpet pile.

We understand that even between cleans it is common to have the odd carpet emergency. By acting fast you can keep your carpets looking new and in their original glory.

There might be times when you don’t have to contact Rainbow Derbyshire, solving the stain with some household ingredients. Please keep in mind that more stubborn stains may require professional attention.

Tea and coffee spills

Acting quickly is essential when tea and coffee spills occur as they contain tannin which can stain your carpet.

  1. Blot the carpet area to remove all excess moisture
  2. Soak a cloth with white vinegar
  3. Press the cloth on the affected area, allowing time for the vinegar to soak into the fibres
  4. Wash the patch with a clean cloth which has been soaked in lukewarm water
  5. Repeat the steps if needed until the stain has vanished

Ink stains

If you are in for a chance of removing an ink stain you need to act fast. Using a combination of the below can help remove the stain.

  1. Combine 5 tablespoons of baking soda, 5 tablespoons of salt and half a cup of soda water
  2. Pour the mixture onto the stain and rub in it
  3. Allow 5 – 10 minutes for it to soak
  4. Use a vacuum cleaner to remove the leftover mixture

Grease and oil marks

Grease marks from food that has been dropped can leave stubborn stains on your carpets. Talcum powder from your bathroom cabinet will help to make your carpet look fresh and clean again, with most stains disappearing.

  1. Cover the grease stain with talcum powder
  2. Wait 6 hours for the talcum powder to absorb the grease
  3. Vacuum the talcum powder up

Chewing gum in the carpet

Chewing gum and carpets bind together well, leaving you with a sticky situation to deal with. So how do you remove the chewing gum so it doesn’t become a long-lasting fixture in your carpet?

  1. Place several ice cubes into a plastic bag
  2. Place the bag onto the chewing gum
  3. Once the chewing gum is frozen, chip it away with a spoon or fork
  4. Vacuum up the gum residue
