The Great ‘Shoes On Or Shoes Off’ Debate For Domestic Carpets
Many countries choose alternative floor coverings such as wood, vinyl and even titles. The UK is one of the few countries in the world where carpets are still the norm.
Hard Flooring vs Carpet
Hard flooding, from a domestic carpet care perspective, is easier to clean and holds less dust and dirt. This can offer welcome relief to pets and feet when it’s hot outside. In fact, according to research carried out by Modern Rugs, carpeted floors harbour over 20x the amount of bacteria found on hard flooring.
But, does leaving your shoes at the door help to reduce the amount of dust and dirt in your home?
The experiment and results
In the Modern Rugs research, carpets were in place where there was high-traffic and in similar-sized households. The test took into consideration the presence of pets and children. This can dramatically impact the amount of bacteria present in carpets.
After three weeks in situ, the rugs were sent to a microbiology lab for testing and there were some surprising results about the impact of domestic carpet care and the hygiene levels of carpets.
The first surprise was that those carpets taken from ‘shoes off’ households had very similar levels of fungi and bacteria to ‘shoes on’ households.
The second surprise that the research revealed was that inefficient cleaning actually increased the amount of bacteria residing within carpet fibres, rather than lessening it.
Professional carpet cleaning uses equipment that delivers greater power and suction. In comparison to retail carpet cleaners, removing dust, dirt and bacteria from deep in the carpet pile.
To help reduce the spreading of bacteria from one place to another, the equipment is kept clean.
